My Favorite Wedding DJ’s

Vendor Highlight!

Music is an important part of your wedding day. Whether you are only using music only for your reception, or plan on having a string quartet play Bridgerton style music all day long, music sets the tone.

As a former marching band nerd, I’m a little partial to music. Over my years as a wedding photographer, I’ve worked with all sorts of DJ’s and bands. Today, I wanted to talk about my favorite DJ’s.

It’s important to first figure out what you want and need before you choose a DJ. Are you looking for someone with extensive knowledge in music from your culture? Are you looking for someone who will help to get the dance floor hoppin’? Maybe you’re looking for something a little softer, like delicate background noise for your wedding.

Interview with a wedding designer

Earlier this month, I interview Sarah, from All the Pretty Things, a wedding decor and floral designer.

I’ve worked several events with Sarah now and every time she designs them, they are stunning. Sarah provides “all the pretty things”! She has gorgeous furniture, backdrops, Table seating charts boards, flowers, stemware & tableware.

She’ll work within your budget to design your wedding decor, deliver your items and pick them back up so there’s nothing you have to do but sit back and admire your stunning wedding!

Interview with a Wedding Cake Artist

I sat down with Dolly of Dolly’s Sweet Sensations the other day to chat about her life as a wedding cake artist.

Wedding cakes can be such a huge statement piece for a wedding. Just like the hair and makeup and the decorations, a wedding cake helps to tell the story if your wedding and your love. It’s the edible part of your decorations.

A wedding cake can be huge or tiny. It can be standard flavored with a bold design or have a simple elegant design with bold flavors. That’s what I love about wedding cakes is how versatile they are and how much personality you can add to the cake.

Watch the video below to learn more about hiring a wedding cake artist, including the important things you should know and prepare before you sit down to talk with a wedding cake artist.

Interview with a Wedding Hair & Makeup artist

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of talking with Lilliam from Lilly Bridal Artistry about hair and makeup for your wedding day.

I’m obsessed with how a hair & makeup artist can pull a bride, bridesmaids, or mother’s entire wedding look together. You have the dress, the shoes, the jewelry but it doesn’t feel like a completed look until the artist gets their hands on you.

There’s so much that goes into hair and makeup behind the scenes, before the wedding and even after. Wedding days are so crazy and unpredictable, I’m glad there’s someone looking out for your camera-ready looks. Watch the interview with Lilliam below.

*Also note* I thought a slideshow was running at one point and it was only running on my side. 😅 I’ve included the photos in question below.

Interview with a Wedding Planner

Monday I had the pleasure of sitting down with Rochelle from R & J Events to talk about her job as a wedding planner.

As a wedding photographer, I find myself wearing the wedding coordination hat often, so when I hear that a couple has hired a wedding planner, I’m giddy! That means I can relax a little and let someone else run the schedule & field the questions and I can focus 100% on taking photos.

I learned so much from talking with Rochelle about wedding planning. The most interesting thing I learned is that the first vendors that she works on hiring after the Venue are the vendors who physically have to be at your wedding. It makes sense, and I’ve never thought of it like that. They can’t be in multiple places at once so it’s important to lock them in for your wedding date.

Why you Should Consider Hiring a Wedding Planner

As a wedding photographer, I’ve been to so many unique weddings. Some planned and organized by the bride and groom, some organized by a family member and some planned and organized by a wedding planner.

I enjoy working weddings with wedding planners. When there isn’t one, I find myself picking up minor wedding coordination roles, like developing schedules and letting couples know when they should do certain things. It’s nice to pass that on to a professional planner.

Wedding planners are so much more than schedulers and time keepers, though. I had the chance to sit down with Kari at Notably Yours Weddings & Events last week to talk with her about what goes into her job.

What is the most important thing you do for couples?

I feel that it is so important to offer the couples, and parents, a piece of mind for their special day. The amount of stress that they all are able to remove during the wedding process and on the wedding, day is incredible and help them have more fun as it becomes more memorable.

I think this would have to range from fanning the couples in the July heat; gathering cold waters (but with disposable straws for the bride to not mess up her lip stick), to helping her change heels while walking the property for photos; making sure they eat / remain hydrated for the day,  and serving them their dinner meal first as I make sure my client take their time to eat. These small tasks add up, but they are also so worth it to take care of our couples, as we should.

Is there something you do that couples don’t realize you do?

This would be to take care of each of the “behind the scenes” tasks, that truly reflect the entire wedding day itself. The ability to bring together many vendors for each individual wedding and ensure that each person completes their job for the couple and in the most efficient way. We provide a piece of mind, that we are there to fully ensure and fulfill the couples’ true vision. I have had a caterer arrive with the incorrect meal selections; a baker bringing the incorrect stand, and dinner napkins having the incorrect fold after all details were confirmed; and we always fix the details before the bride could ever know something was wrong.

What is something you wish couples knew about wedding coordinators?

We aren’t always so serious and we love to have fun too!! There is a difference form a wedding coordinator to a wedding planner. As a wedding planner, we are very involved within the planning process. We are

experienced and continue our education to assist them better with classes / courses, throughout the year.

What is the most frequently asked question you get?

How many weddings do we plan a year? Answer: beginning = 15-20, average = 25-30 common =32-36

What is your favorite part of your job?

This is a hard one!! I love design, so the planning and décor meetings I feel like I can live for! However, from the start to finish, this would have to be, when we have begun the processional and everyone is down the aisle and I go to get the bride, then the fathers always have one final moment with their daughters. We then fix her veil, flowers, and train, and watch her go towards her soon to be husband. It is such a special moment!!

Why is it important for couples to hire a wedding coordinator?

There are so many factors and details that are over looked and reflect on the vision, schedule, and the flow of the wedding day. We focus on the design, logistics, and communication throughout the planning process. Our number one rule is, “There should never be any assuming”. Some common factors are that, the ceremony begins late, or someone didn’t finish hair and makeup because they were setting up, or the tables have the incorrect linen sizes and much more. We are here to help and ensure that no small or large detail is over looked.

How early should couples book you?

The best time frame for any wedding service, is to book no less than six months. If you are having a full planning wedding planner, then you should seek about booking he / she nine months to one year from the wedding.

What was your favorite (to date) wedding to worked on?

This is hard! I would say our Plunkett wedding in June of 2020 at The Carriage House or The Amundsen Wedding in February of 2020 at Big Sky Barn. The amount of love that poured from both families was truly amazing! The kindness and efforts shown from all sides did not go unnoticed. We have such amazing vendors, food, desserts, and the design was so beautiful!

Is there anything else you would want couples to know?

  • To pay for a wedding planner will truly make all efforts so much simpler, and in the beginning, not the last three months. We are here to help and to offer wedding education along the way to help understand the logistics and the reasons of why we do things.
  • We are here to have fun as well; we love our jobs and we love to help!
  • Communication is key!
  • Be different! It is ok to have more or “different” things are your wedding, they are about the TWO OF YOU.

The Decadent Dukessa

As I prepare to head out to the Dukessa wedding venue today to take wedding photos, I wanted to take some time to share a little bit of information about this unique and decadent wedding venue.

(Update: I will not be heading to the Dukessa today because of the weather. Stay safe and dry all my Houstonians.)

Located a mile from the Galleria, the Dukessa is a full-service event venue with an in-house, award winning culinary team. The Dukessa offers flexible floor plans and innovative systems stunning and indoor and outdoor options for your unique, memorable wedding.

I stopped by the wedding venue Saturday afternoon and had the pleasure of meeting several amazing members of the Dukessa team. They were polite and helpful. It was obvious how much they loved their jobs. After taking a quick tour, I can tell you with out a doubt, that the garden was my FAVORITE part of the whole venue. I can imagine intimate cocktail hours spent there, or even a small wedding ceremony held between the limestone and bright Bougainvilleas.

The New “Normal”?

When shit hit the fan, everyone told themselves, ‘it’s okay, it will go away, it will all be fine.’ We’ve nearly gone a year with COVID and for the next year at least, I see there being a ‘new normal’ for weddings.

Even when COVID calms down (finally) and people start to feel safe, there will still be people who don’t trust their new felt safety. What does that mean for weddings?

This means I get to become an intimate wedding photographer. I imagine the size of weddings will continue to be at a reduced size. There will be more intimate weddings of 50 or fewer guests. This could be GREAT for the wedding industry.

Hear me out, fewer guests means that couples can spend more money on themselves and the decorations they wanted, the flowers they really wanted and the top (most extravagant) intimate wedding photography package.

What I envision is a full scaled styled shoot for a real wedding. We as wedding professionals know that a styled shoot is just an extravagant wedding we would like to shoot, and use as inspiration for our clients. Everyone brings out the big guns, decorators bring their best, most expensive, decorations. Florists make designs they’ve been dreaming of since they were little, treats and mobile booze bars are arranged to perfection…

I imagine the new ‘normal’ might look like this:

  • 50 or fewer guests
  • a virtual experience for friends and family who couldn’t make it
  • Decorations to make your friends and family jealous.
  • The most romantic wedding you could have imagined.

The Carriage House

Today, I wanted to highlight an amazing wedding venue, The Carriage House in Conroe Texas. I had the pleasure of poking around, talking to their wonderful staff and taking some photos of the Carriage House last Wednesday. It is such a stunning location. Every time I turned around I found a new favorite location to take photos of wedding couples.

I asked Anna & Kristi a few questions that I thought might be helpful in your wedding planing process. Check out their answers and some photos from their venue.

QUESTIONS:

Kelly: Who is the point person for couples coming to your venue?

Anna: Myself and Kristi are typically the couple’s point of contact when they come to tour. We do have other staff they would have on their wedding day and they will hear from the owner via email throughout the planning process.

K: That’s pretty awesome that the owner sends a personal email!

K: What is the best way for couples to schedule an appointment to tour your venue?

A: We have a self scheduling function on our website, but we are happy to schedule them as well via email or phone.

K: What is your personal favorite part about the venue.

A: The Chapel, which is our newest addition.

K: What is the most unique/fun/creative thing you have seen at a wedding at your venue?

A: That’s a tough one! I’ve seen so many unique ideas. We did have one couple, they were both engineers, and they used a 3D printer to create some items to incorporate into their centerpieces.

K: What is your rain contingency?

A: We have both an outdoor and indoor ceremony area and the reception space is indoors.

K: Do you have a max and a minimum guest count?

A: 75-300 people is the best range!

K: How far in advance should couples book your venue?

A: A year and a half if they want a Saturday. A year still works well for Fridays and Sundays.

K: What makes your venue unique to other venues.

A: The chapel and the waterfront garden.

A: I’ve been here for several years and have seen how the company keeps striving to make wedding days better and better with each passing year! That’s defiantly something to look for in your venue.
